If you have had a minor injury from a dog bite, such as a scratch or a small wound:

• Apply antiseptic/antibacterial cream to the wound to reduce the risk of bacterial infection.
• Do not put any bandage on the wound. It is better to leave the wound open so that it dries quickly.
• It is important to contact a doctor within 24 hours of a dog bite. The doctor will give you anti-rabies injections to avoid complications.

If the wound is deep, such as bleeding or visible flesh:

• Place a clean and dry cloth on the wound and press it to stop bleeding.
• If there is no bleeding, wash the wound with clean water and soap.
• If you feel weak or faint, seek medical help immediately.
• If the bleeding does not stop or if the skin around the wound is swollen and red, you should see a doctor immediately.

Dog bite treatment 

Your doctor will decide how to treat your wound. In most cases, doctors recommend a vaccine or injection. If the wound is a scratch, then the best treatment is the vaccine. However, if the wound is deep, you will be given an injection of anti-rabies immunoglobulin.

If you have been bitten by a pet dog, you will be given three injections, as pet dogs are usually vaccinated. The first injection will be given on the day the dog has been bitten, the second after three days and the third 7 days after the dog has been bitten. At the same time, if you are bitten by a dog on the street, you may have to get 5 to 7 injections.
